Why I Wrote AI & the God Complex

I wrote AI & the God Complex because I found myself returning to a question: as machines become more capable, what responsibility must remain with us?

My work in technology has given me an appreciation of what innovation can achieve. It has also made me think carefully about the trust we place in the systems we build. When a machine offers an answer, do we question it? When its recommendation affects another person’s life, who takes responsibility?

These questions became more personal during a period of illness and reflection. I began thinking more deeply about faith, mortality, purpose and the things that give our lives meaning. Those reflections helped shape this book.

The question behind the title

For me, the “God Complex” concerns the authority we give technology. We can become so accustomed to its guidance that we stop examining its answers—or taking ownership of our decisions.

AI can support our thinking. We still have to decide what is right, what is fair and what consequences we are prepared to accept.

Faith, judgement and responsibility

I write from my perspective as a Muslim, while inviting readers of every faith, and those with no religious belief, into the conversation.

The book explores intelligence, consciousness, compassion and accountability. It also considers what AI means for Africa: whose knowledge informs these systems, whose interests they serve, and how we can help shape their development.

An invitation to reflect

My hope is that this book encourages you to pause, question and form your own views. You do not need a technical background to engage with its central questions. They concern how we live, how we treat one another and the future we choose to build.

I invite you to read, reflect and bring your own experience to the conversation.

AI & the God Complex is offered as one digital bundle for R149.00 once-off, including the PDF, EPUB and online Web Reader editions.
